The Flower Fields of Carlsbad

As you walk through the gates at The Flower Fields, it feels as if you have entered a world only described in fairy tales. Your eyes immediately take in the vibrant colors of blooming ranunculus flowers that are carefully arranged in color-specific rows. This fresh-air working farm spans 50 acres which gives plenty of room for your little ones to run, kick dirt, and get out their wiggles as you explore the colorful floral bands. It's also the perfect setting for beautiful photos with your kids that are sure to be your favorites over the years. Don't want to ask a stranger to take a photo for you? No problem! Grab a phone tripod and remote control from Amazon and set it up in one of the many alcoves that allow you to immerse yourself in a sea of pink, white, yellow, orange, or purple blossoms.

Once everyone has been thoroughly worn out from walking up and down the long dirt paths, you can climb into one of their antique tractor wagons for a tour and brief history of The Flower Fields. I mean, all kids love a good tractor ride, and let's face it--you need a little break, too! Relax, breathe in the salty coastal air, and look west when the tractor reaches the highest row of the farm to enjoy the view of the ocean that is just a couple miles away.

Before you leave, be sure to explore the fragrant sweet pea maze, artist and demonstration gardens, poinsettia display, and orchid greenhouse. There is also the cutest playground near the exit that was created using the playhouses and giant mushrooms that comprised Santa's Village in Lake Arrowhead many years ago, but unfortunately, it appears to be closed this year.

After exploring the farm, if you find yourself feeling inspired to build your own garden, you can exit through an Armstrong Garden Centers store and pick up flowers and plants for your home. Personally, I prefer to leave it to the experts since no flower has lasted longer than a few days once it got into my hands, but hopefully you have a greener thumb than I!

Want to make a day out of your trip to The Flower Fields? Perfect! The parking lot is adjacent to the Carlsbad outlet mall and several restaurants. Our favorite pick is Ruby's Diner--a 40s themed restaurant with the best milkshakes and malts in town (plus, this is a restaurant I worked in for six years wearing their famous red and white striped dress and triangular white headband). And just around the corner is the beach and Legoland! There is so much to do and explore--it will surely create a lasting memory. I mean, I take my kids here every year because my mom did the same with me and my sister, and it has become such a special place to me.
